What’s Your Gayest Look?

You may not have followed a story that has transpired over the last few days involving Jay Leno. If you haven’t, let me briefly catch you up. In 2006, playright Jeff Whitty, creator of Avenue Q, wrote a letter to Jay Leno regarding his constant overuse of gay jokes. This was around the time of Brokeback Mountain, which proved to be a source of a large amount of comedic material. The result of that letter was a dialogue that opened up between Jeff and Jay Leno, in which Jeff left the conversation feeling a bit more comfortable with Jay’s views on the GLBT community.

Last week, Jay Leno interviewed Ryan Phillipe and questioned him about his first role as a gay teenager on a popular soap opera. Ryan became visually offended and uncomfortable with Jay asked him to look at the camera and give him his gayest look. Actually, he asked Ryan to look into the camera, and pretned his lover Billy Bob had just ridden in shirtless from Wyoming, and give him his gayest look. Certainly Brokeback jokes are tired at this point! No?

Ryan, thankfully, declined and refused to let the conversation proceed. So as Ryan refuses to give Jay Leno his gayest look, I’ll give him mine.
